Royal Portrush Golf Club

Royal Portrush Golf Club.

The great news is that Royal Portrush will be hosting the British Open championship in 2019. This is October the 10th and apparently, all general tickets are sold out! So we have a problem with sourcing tickets for the event.

In the event that you cant source tickets and you really want to watch the event live? Well, I'd say take a trip to the town of Portrush that week, hang out and you might be lucky with getting your hands on tickets that people can't use.

What to do and where to stay?

Also, if you cannot find entrance tickets and why not spend the time in Belfast City? Then watch the event on TV or in the local pub and play golf at various golf courses in the area. Such as Ardglass Golf Club, Malone Golf Club, Royal Belfast and Hollywood Golf Club. The bad news is that Royal County Down Golf Club is booked out for golf tee times that week.

However, there is always plenty of Irish Golf  courses to explore in neighbouring Co. Donegal. Golfers could play and stay at Rosapenna Golf Resort. There are two fun links courses to play there and Portsaloon Golf Club is not far away either. Ballyliffin Golf Club has 36 holes and that course is not too far away from taking Greencastle. On a side note, there is a small car ferry that runs for Magillian point to Greencastle which takes time off the journey travelling from Portrush to Ballyliffin.

Airports for Portrush?

Indeed, Shannon Airport and Cork airports are quite the distance from Portrush, however, if needs be a person could drive from either airport to Portrush, but this is not advised. Dublin & Belfast airports are the closest to Portrush. Essentially, there are vastly more flights in and out of Dublin Airport compared to the rest of the Irish airports.

Finally, will Rory McIlroy win? Will he show up that week? Currently (October 2018), his performances are there and thereabouts. Sure the Open Championship is eight months away and who knows what will happen between now and then. But!! It would a super major to win. We will just have to wait and see if we will have an Irish winner!

But getting back to what to do. I did see rooms and houses for rent that are very high for the Portrush area. However, shop around and you can find B&Bs within an hours drive of Portrush. But, book now or as soon as you can to ensure you have a place to stay and avoid the last minute rush looking for rooms.

Either way or wherever you find yourself, the Open Championship will be another great event to see and experience the atmosphere. Enjoy if you go!
